SPS Annual Dinner
This year's Annual Dinner will be held on Monday 12 October at 6 PM (eating from 6:30) at the University Arms.
For those of you who are new or have not been before, the University Arms is the pub for the University of Sheffield located near the University roundabout.
It is accessible by both bus and tram. There is limited parking nearby.
For more info, or to book your place/s, please contact James Grayson
SPS is advertising for new members.
The Committee has arranged for adverts to be placed in local magazines inviting people to come to meetings and join the Society. Hopefully, this will increase our membership and add to the interest and variety at meetings.
THE PACKET
Some of our members may be aware of the Society’s circuit boxing the important part it plays in the Society.. About half of our members are on the circuit, and each month we send out a box with about 20 books an packets, containing items for members to buy.
The books and packets contain stamps which will hopefully appeal to a wide s p e c t r u m o f c o l l e c t o r s - B r i t i s h , Commonwealth and foreign, as well as thematic stamps. Prices range from 5p (or less!) to perhaps £10+ for scarcer items.
Boxes are passed hand-to-hand or at the Society’s meetings, so there are not postal costs involved; there is not subscription fee to join the circuit. The May box has just been returned, and 85% of circuit members have bought something - so it’s obviously filling a need.
With the disappearance of stamp shops and stamp fairs, the box is becoming, for many, the only source of stamps - and from the comfort of your own home! Vendors are charged 10% on sales, and the box has become the biggest source of income for the Society, overtaking membership fees, and helping to peg the rates!
So, if you don’t presently take the box, think about it. Here’s a chance to help both yourself and the Society.

Stumped by a stamp
Bonanza month! One from James Grayson - somewhere in the Balkans, I think. One with no country or value (unless it’s 2 carp) One which I think may be Persia, but I can’t find. Answers next month (if received)

Corny Corner
Today I went to the post office to mail 20 letters... so I bought 20 stamps... and the clerk just handed them to me. So I said "Am I supposed to stick all these on myself?"...and she said "No. Stick them on the envelopes.."
